Hub Social cinema Screening - ACT ion -ism
Community Cinema Night or should we change it to - social cinema?
The premiere of the film ACTionism, directed by Michael Shaw, took place at the Better Business Summit in Manchester, an annual flagship conference organized by the Better Business Network at Manchester Metropolitan University’s Business School. The theme of this year's summit, "Future Proof," posed a thought-provoking question: “What does your business need to truly be future proof?”
Two weeks following the premiere, the film ACTionism, which follows the inspiring journey of Ellie Meredith as she transforms from a passive consumer into an active citizen, received nearly 40 requests for community screenings from a diverse array of organizations. Requests poured in from the Green Party, Doughnut Labs, universities, schools, festivals, and even Polmont Community Hub—along with many other locations from around the globe, including the US, New Zealand, Wales, Denmark, Ireland, and the stunning Alps.
As part of this remarkable journey, we at PCHub are filled with pride to announce that we hosted the inaugural community screening on Thursday, January 30, in our cozy "Wee Hall."The producer said - This venue feels like the perfect fit for the film, embodying the spirit of connection and community that ACTionism promotes. It was an incredible honor for us to act as the launch pad for the film's world tour, and we can hardly contain our excitement about being a part of this significant movement.
Following our launch in Polmont, Falkirk, Scotland, the film quickly made its mark, with its third screening occurring just two days later in Sallanches, France. From there, it journeyed to Chamonix, where it was showcased at Outer Range, a local craft brewery, alongside a unique repair workshop. This exhilarating international adventure marks the beginning of its global tour, and we find ourselves reflecting on where this powerful film will venture next within the expansive network of communities dedicated to sharing and repair.
Moreover, we take immense pride in the fact that the production crew chose our hub as the very first venue to receive their handbook digitally! We printed page 16 specifically for our Q&A session, which served as a valuable guide for our host, Sustainable Braes, on facilitating impactful social cinema nights. The excitement doesn’t end there; the team is actively seeking funding and sponsors to help make printed copies of this fantastic handbook available.
Their approach to community screenings is not just about film; it’s about igniting inspiration, fostering connections, and seeding collective action within our communities. It’s crucial to recognize that, despite the misconceptions that marketing has created around activism, every act—no matter how small, like a simple litter pick—plays a significant role in the global environmental movement.
The handbook itself is a vibrant 60-page magazine brimming with stories, ideas, participation methods, and resources designed to connect communities, and it is a source of pride for us at PCH. Being part of this global tour feels like we are contributing to something much larger than ourselves—a chance to impact our world meaningfully. We can’t wait to see how this film will continue to inspire communities and spark vital conversations across the globe. It's a journey of collective passion and action, and we are thrilled to be on this path together!
