Sunflower competition

Image
Grow with it - sunflowers, On a sunny spring day here at Polmont community hub (PCHub) we gathered with anticipation for a new first of event at ourl hub. The cheerful atmosphere was buzzing with laughter and the sweet scent of blooming flowers as Forth Environmental Link (FEL) hosted a delightful Easter celebration. It was a day full of joy, learning, and a wonderful opportunity to kick off the “Grow With It” campaign in collaboration with the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS). As families arrived at our easter event they were greeted by the vibrant sight of saplings in tubs of various plants and foods, and also - sunflowers, their golden petals still small but about to grow brightly under the warm sun. Braes Friendly Growers (BFGs) had set up a charming plant sale featuring an array of edible plants, encouraging everyone to take a step towards growing their own food. Guests delighted in the idea that they could cultivate their very own treats right at home!  People chat...

Apple Day comes to the Braes

Image
Have you heard of Apple Day? There's a day dedicated to celebrate the apple:  Saturday, the 4th of October 2025, will be the inaugural annual Apple Day for PCHub Come along and celebrate the apple with us. It's one of the nation's best-loved fruits. Launched in 1990 by Common Ground, Apple Day is now an annual autumn event. All over the country      next to busy A925       The apple is a firm favourite in the Scottish fruit bowl, but peel back its humble exterior and you'll realise that the apple has a huge part to play in our culture and the ecology around us. Launched in 1990 by the charity Common Ground, Apple Day was intended to celebrate the beloved fruit's diversity and heritage The first common ground, Apple Day was held in the old Apple Market in London's Covent Garden, bringing fruit back to the market after 16 years absence. The event brought together apple growers and nurseries; cider makers and juice pressers; illustrators and w...

childrens parties

Image
Hosting a Children's Party It may seem like a simple question: Do you host children's parties on Saturday afternoons? The straightforward answer is yes, we can and do. However, there's much more involved. Someone needs to open the venue, and a person has to lock up afterward, and we need to show the individual booking the party how to complete the reservation and make payment. Additionally, we may need to set up tables, ensure the venue is clean, and handle cleanup afterward. Our unpaid volunteers are extremely stretched; we have been working tirelessly at the hub for months, prior to our taking over management from the council on October 1, 2024, since then its been literally - countless hours of community volunteer work for our small but growing group of volunteers. Initially, we accepted bookings for these parties as a source of income, but we now need to reassess this, as it adds a lot of extra work that we really don’t need right now. Our bookings coordinator has buil...

Polmont Horticultual society annual show

Image
Polmont Horticultural Society           The annual flower show organized by the Polmont Horticultural Society will take place at Polmont Community Hub on Saturday, September 6, 2025. This popular event was previously held at the hub, when it was known as the Greenpark Centre, on Saturday, September 7, 2024. The show saw a high number of entries across various classes, including flowers, vegetables, handicrafts, and baking.  For more details, see the   Falkirk Herald entry:      The Polmont Horticultural Society was established in 1843, which is hard for us at the hub to believe now. Back then, one hundred and eighty-two years ago, Polmont was a small village, a British industrialist purchased prime Scottish real estate in our Polmont village. Having become wealthy from burning fossil fuels, he chose Polmont due to its location along the new Edinburgh and Glasgow railway line. Polmont was ideally situated equidistant from...

The Great Get Together

Image
The Great Get Together The organizer of this event had been planning for months, with many local groups collaborating to make it a success. The main organizer, Anne Hannah, held weekly planning meetings with groups interested in coming together to celebrate Jo Cox’s belief that we have more in common than what divides us. Planning a big event like this was challenging, especially since Anne job is not a professional event organizer—she manages a family home and works full-time as a local councillor. The event was a great success, Anne was an inspirational leader she done an amazing job organising, she tirelessly advocates for more women to get into politics. It's important to note that The Great Get Together is not a political event; representatives from all political parties were welcomed and invited, and those who attended demonstrated their support for communities coming together, supporting one another, and putting an end to hate speech. The event was designed to be inclusiv...

Montys inclusive day out

Image
Monty's Big Day Out It happened! We managed to take part in the relay your way, it was a massive adventure for our Monty. We received a free e-bike hire from Forth Environmental Link (FEL) Travel Hub. The wonderful team delivered the bike to the hub and provided Monty's carer, Kenny, with instructions on how to strap Monty in and keep him safe. This included a helmet that unfortunately didn’t fit, as well as guidance on how the electric bikes (or power assist bikes) work, since Monty's carer had never ridden one before. Kenny is a keen cyclist and has completed countless cycling adventures worldwide. In the UK alone, he has done Land's End to John O'Groats, two Coast to Coast rides, A reverse Ride to the Sun C2C for last years relay, the Hebridean Way, and the UK's longest cycle route, the NCN1, from Skaw Beach on Unst to Dover—all under his own power. This was a first for him, being a carer for a bear on an e-bike. Monty's apron had coffee stains ...
